Postdoctoral Research Associate in Dust emission from forming and evolving galaxies Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position at the Jeremiah Horrocks Institute for Astrophysics and Supercomputing of the University of Central Lancashire, UK, to carry out research into dust emission from forming and evolving galaxies, under the supervision of Dr. Cristina Popescu. The holder of this position will work with Dr. C. Popescu and Prof. Brad Gibson to perform calculations of the transfer of radiation in numerically simulated galaxies, with the aim of predicting the relation of the amplitude and spectrum of dust emission to the basic physical characteristics of the galaxies and their environment, considered in a cosmological context. The postdoctoral fellow will have access to the state-of-the art cosmological simulations and dusty radiative transfer codes developed at the Horrocks Institute. There will also be outstanding opportunities for confrontation of these predictions with observations due to the participation of the Horrocks Institute in Herschel Space Observatory/ATLAS far-infrared/submm and GAMA optical spectroscopic extragalactic surveys. The successful candidate will have a PhD in astrophysics or a closely related field. He or she would ideally have experience in dusty radiative transfer/dust emission calculations; some familiarity with N-body/SPH/AMR calculations and/or semi-analytic galaxy formation/chemical evolution models also would be of advantage. However, scientists with other research backgrounds in theoretical and observational extragalactic astronomy who are highly motivated to work in these areas of research are also strongly encouraged to apply. The postdoctoral fellow will be free to make extensive use of our suite of High Performance Computing Facilities, including our (i) current on-campus Shared Memory Facility; (ii) a new 500-1000 node cluster to be installed in 2009-Q3; and (iii) our Core Partner Share of COSMOS, the UK National Cosmology Supercomputer. The research program for this position will be done in the context of an international collaboration and offers excellent opportunities for developing scientific contacts with our collaborators in the UK, Germany and Australia. The position is available from October 2009. The closing date for the receipt of applications is 30 April 2009. Applicants should submit electronic copies of their CV, publication list, research interests & plans, and the contact details for three referees, along with the Application Form (available from URL2 above) to humanresources@uclan.ac.uk (cc'd to Dr. Cristina Popescu cpopescu@uclan.ac.uk ); please quote reference number 21A-06-02 (Research Associate Dust Emission). The Horrocks Institute is comprised of nearly 40 staff and students, making it one of the largest in the UK. We are located on the University's main campus, on a pleasant site in the centre of Preston. Preston itself is nestled on the edge of the beautiful Ribble Valley and the Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The Lake District, Peak District, and Yorkshire Dales are all within an hour reach. Both Manchester and Liverpool are within 45 minutes reach. For further information, contact Dr. Cristina Popescu (cpopescu@uclan.ac.uk ).
