13th Annual Conference of the European Society for Astronomy in Culture
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

This is the first announcement of the 13th Annual Conference of SEAC to be
celebrated in Isili (Sardinia, Italy) from June 28 to July 3, 2005, under
the title "Lights and shadows in cultural astronomy".

Dates and General Scheduling:
The delegates are expected to arrive in Sardinia during Tuesday June 28th
(first night included in the hotel pack) and to leave on Monday July 4th
(Sunday the 3rd is the last night).

Organizer and Sponsors:
The conference will be organized under the umbrella of the "Associazione
Archeofila Sarda". The Comune di Isili (confirmed) and the government of
the "Regione Sarda" (TBC) are also expected to contribute.

Conference Fee, Lodging and Meals:
The conference fee will consist of a single pack including participation on
the conference, conference abstract book and proceedings, 6 nights of hotel
(June 28th to July 4th), and full board from the dinner of the 28th to
breakfast of the 4th. A conference fee of 350 Euro in single room and 300
Euro in double (or triple) are expected. The fee for accompanying person(s)
will be 250 Euros in double (or triple) room. Three hotels of similar
category (2 star), Il Sole, Cardellino and Pioppo (all within walking
distance of conference venue), have been selected. These have a limited
capacity so, if you intend to participate, please cantact us as soon as
possible. We will inform in later announcements of the different
possibilities to pay the fee.

The venue:
The conference will be held in the village of Isili. This is a small
typical interior Sardinian town located some 70 Km. to the north of
Cagliari, Sardinia's capital. It is surrounded by beautiful landscape and
by a marvellous collection of ancient remains of the worth famous nuraghic
culture.

To and from Isili:
The local organizers expect to provide transport for most of the delegates
from both Cagliari harbour or airport. Dates of arrival and departure
should be known well in advance to arrange this. For those arriving to
other airports (e.g. Alghero) or harbours (e.g. Olbia or Golfo Aranci)
other solutions will have to be worked out.

Excursions:
Two excursions are planned within the conference. These we expect will be
free of charge if the negotiation with the island government are fruitful.
If not, a small fee would be charged. An afternoon excursion to the
surroundings of Isili is planned for June 30th, probably including various
nuraghe (Is Paras), a tomb of giant, a sacred well (Santa Vittoria), the
Museum of Laconi and the impressive site of Pranu Muteddu. A full day
excursion will be arranged for either Saturday 2nd or Sunday 3rd to the
northwest of the Island, including lunch, and visiting Santa Cristina,
nuraghe Losa and Santu Antine and the domus de janas necropolis of Santa
Andrea Priu.

Invited speakers:
We will have two invited speakers. One will be a first line archaeologist
whose work is somehow related to cultural astronomy (TBC). The other will
be Prof. Michael Hoskin who has performed extensive archaeoastronomical
research on Sardinia. Also, a special sessions devoted to "shadows" of
cultural astronomy will be handled. Profs. Stanislaw Iwanizewski and Clive
Ruggles have already agreed on their participation. If you have good
examples of this topic (pathological archaeoastronomy) you want to discuss,
we are really expecting your contribution.

Program:
See at the website indicated below.

Proceedings:
This will be published by the LOC after the conference. Further
instructions will be given in later announcements.

Further information: If you have any additional question or comment, please
do not hesitate to contact both of us at the e-mail addresses indicated
below.

Waiting for your participation, sincerely yours,

Mauro Peppino Zedda Juan Antonio Belmonte

(Aus: Electronic Newsletter for the History of Astronomy, No. 59,
March 26, 2005, Item 8)

The Historical Astronomy Division (HAD) of the American Astronomical
Society will meet Sept. 4 to Sept. 8, 2005 (Sun.-Thurs.), at the University
of Cambridge, in England. This will be a joint meeting with the Division of
Planetary Sciences (DPS) of the AAS. The HAD program will include 9, ninety
minute sessions of papers. Four plenary sessions with the DPS will open
with invited presentations of a historical nature. A Sunday evening
reception will open the meeting; HAD papers will be on Monday, Tuesday, and
Wednesday; with the conference DPS/HAD banquet on Wednesday; and on
Thursday a final plenary session will be followed by tours of Cambridge
sites relevant to our meeting.

The deadline for advance registration, reservation of accommodation, and
submission of abstracts, is 1 July 2005. However, it is essential for
planning the HAD sessions that speakers inform the papers committee of
their proposals at an early date. AAS members will submit their abstracts
directly to the AAS website by 1 July (in addition to informing the
committee); HAD speakers who are not AAS members will have their abstracts
submitted by the papers committee. At the date of this announcement, the
registration forms are not yet available.

Call for papers:
Proposals for presentations to the sessions are invited. A brief abstract,
including duration and media needs, can be emailed to Peter Abrahams at
.
Papers will be limited to the subject of the history of astronomy,
including the application of historical data to current studies. Papers can
be as long as 30 minutes in length, including set up and questions, but we
encourage those whose topics can be expressed in less time, to request the
appropriate duration. A papers committee, composed of HAD officers, will
review proposals for appropriate subject matter, and will assemble papers
into thematic sessions. Poster papers are encouraged, and can be on a wider
range of topics than spoken presentations.

The program:
HAD Papers will be presented in the Umney Theatre, Robinson College,
Grange Road.
The schedule for Monday, Tuesday, & Wednesday is as follows:
Joint morning plenary session, 9:00am to 10:30 (Sidgwick Road site).
Paper Session I, 11:00am to 12:30pm.
Paper Session II, 2:00pm to 3:30pm.
Paper Session III, 4:00pm to 5:30pm.
HAD posters will be on display for the entire three days, in the foyer
areas near the Umney Theatre.

Two sessions are planned on the history of radio astronomy. At least one
session is planned on the history of planetary sciences, and one on
cosmology (keynote address by Helge Kragh). Other sessions will be
announced.

The four DPS plenary sessions, including historic introductions organized
by HAD, are as follows:
Mon. 5 Sept., DPS session on the Cassini-Huygens Mission, will open with
Albert Van Helden, speaking on the Saturn observations of Huygens &
Cassini. Tues. 6 Sept., session on the Mars Explorer Mission, will feature

Kolloquium "Entwicklung der Astrophysik"
----------------------------------------

Kolloquium des Arbeitskreises Astronomiegeschichte im Rahmen der Tagung der
Astronomischen Gesellschaft in Koeln, Montag, 26. September 2005

Sonntag, 25. September 2005: Ab 19 Uhr gemuetliches Treffen in einem
Restaurant

Montag, 26. September 2005, 10 bis 17 Uhr Tagung (Ort wird noch
mitgeteilt)

Tagungsgebuehr: 20,- EUR, davon soll der Tagungsband mitfinanziert
werden.

Die naechste Internationale Wissenschaftliche Jahrestagung der
Astronomischen Gesellschaft (AG) findet vom 26. September bis 1. Oktober
2005 in Koeln statt: Thema "The many facets of the universe - Revelations
by new instruments", Tagungs-Webseite:
http://www.ari.uni-heidelberg.de/AG/

Kosmos.

Conference "Who needs scientific instruments?"
----------------------------------------------

Museum Boerhaave, Leiden, The Netherlands, would like to announce that it
is organising a three day conference on scientific instruments, their use
and their users from October 19 to 22, 2005. The centre of attention of
this conference will be the users of scientific instruments. During the
conference the users' role will be explored in three different topics:

- The Status of Instruments,
- Location & Organisation,
- Innovation.

These topics have been chosen because they cover a large area in the field
of the instrument-based history of science. We hope that studying the
interrelations of the three distinct topics will result in a new synthesis
in which users and their instruments function as cornerstones in the
history of science. We therefore invite historians of science as well as
historians of scientific instruments to give their views and discuss the
users and use of scientific instruments.

Further information on registration, presentations and accommodation will
be available in the first call for papers in early spring 2005.

Ausstellung "Der geschmiedete Himmel"
-------------------------------------

Maechtige
Grabanlagen, umfangreiche Bronzeschaetze, Goldschmuck und einzigartige
Prunkwaffen sind als ihre Statussymbole ueberliefert.

Mittelpunkt der Zusammenschau bronzezeitlicher Lebenswelt sind die
Himmelsscheibe von Nebra und der Sonnenwagen von Trundholm (Daenemark).

Ausstellung "Ein Turm fuer Albert Einstein"
-------------------------------------------

Einblicke in

Einstein exhibit in Los Angeles
-------------------------------

Making its only West Coast appearance at the Skirball Cultural Center,
"Einstein" is a comprehensive presentation on the life and theories of the
greatest scientist of the twentieth century. This exhibition explores the
legacy of Albert Einstein (1879-1955) not only as a scientific genius who
reconfigured our concepts of space and time, but also as a complex man
engaged in the social and political issues of his era. It examines the
phenomenon of his fame and his enduring status as a global icon whose
likeness has become virtually synonymous with genius.

Visitors can examine Einstein's report card, inspect his FBI file, and
enjoy his family photographs, love letters, diary entries and his personal
telescope. Exhibition highlights include scientific manuscripts and
original correspondence - including original handwritten pages from the
1912 manuscripts of the special theory of relativity and his 1939 letter to
President Roosevelt about nuclear power - and a wealth of other documents
from the Albert Einstein Archives at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
Visitors can also delight in eye-opening interactive exhibits illuminating
Einstein's most revolutionary theories.

Through May 29, 2005.
